In doing this, we will explore the ways in which the body, gender and sexuality have been produced/imagined differently in different times and places.Issues which will be raised include the status of the body; biological or cultural, the sex/gender distinction, kinship and concepts of the person, in the light of gender theories, psychoanalytic approaches to gender, sexuality and the body, race and colonialism, resistance and power politics.In the process of understanding anthropological perspectives on important topics that affect our everyday lives and the world as a whole, we will develop a familiarity with the state of anthropology today and how we got here.
It will explore the history of London at first-hand, look at its portrayal by artists, writers and filmmakers, and evaluate a range of anthropological ways of tackling its complexity.
Anthropology and the Visual introduces you to different approaches to the visual, such as the ways anthropologists use and analyse images.
These take students beyond the theorisation of development as linear progression, or as a monolithic force acting on the world, and instead reveal a field fractured by contradictions, contestations and contingencies that is produced, reproduced and interpreted across multiple locations and cultural contexts.

The module will also introduce key themes and show how anthropologists – including the module lecturers – have engaged with the visual in their research.

These questions and others will be tackled through a range of field trips, sound walks, and practical documenting exercises, as well as lectures and screenings.
This innovative module will take a series of direct experiences of London as the starting points for considering possible anthropological approaches to the city.
